Autism is a lifelong, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them. It is also a lot more common than many people realise, with there being roughly 700,000 people on the autism spectrum in the UK - more than 1 in 100. This course will look at what autism is and what a parent of an autistic child can expect, the behaviours they need to be aware of, and possible challenges an autistic child might face. It will help you to understand how to parent a child with autism. The learning objectives for this course are as follows:

  1. To know what autism is
  2. Planning of direct work - having a focus / purpose of the session, identifying the appropriate tools, preparing the logistics of the session, preparing the child or young person
  3. To understand autism in the early years and the behaviours to be aware of
  4. To be aware of the challenges that autistic young children may face
  5. To understand how to parent a child with autism

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
